Expat Living in Semarang, Central Java

Semarang is the capital of Central Java and one of the most comfortable medium-sized cities in Indonesia for expatriates who want a slower pace of life than Jakarta, but still need good schools, hospitals, shopping malls, airport access, and easy weekend escapes. The city continues to grow and offers a practical balance between business life, family life, and access to heritage, mountains, and the north coast of Java.

From an expat perspective, Semarang often appeals to people who value convenience without the intensity of Jakarta traffic and scale. It is easier to learn your way around, easier to build a routine, and for many families it feels more manageable. At the same time, Semarang is still very much an Indonesian city, so newcomers should expect to adapt to local systems, tropical weather, and a more limited range of international services than they would find in Jakarta or Singapore.

When I first came to live here, I was stared at, children giggled, and sometimes people pointed and said “bule.” At first it felt as if I was the only foreigner in a very large place. Later I discovered that Semarang does have an international community, just not one that is always immediately visible. That remains true today. It is not a city where the expat world dominates, but it is a city where people can gradually find community, especially through schools, churches, sport, and Facebook-based networks.

Expat Community Groups

Semarang still has a small but useful international network, and social media remains one of the easiest ways for newcomers to connect. The Semarang Multinational Community Facebook group is one of the most practical starting points for asking everyday questions, finding recommendations, and meeting other international families.

The Semarang Hash House Harriers is another social group where both expatriates and internationally minded Indonesians meet regularly for running events and social gatherings.

Because the expat community is relatively small, newcomers often find that friendships develop naturally through schools, sports groups, churches, and neighborhood connections.

Church Services

A few churches in Semarang are known among expatriates and international families.

JKI Injil Kerajaan
Kompleks Grand Marina
Jl. Arteri Utara
Semarang, Jawa Tengah 50144
Tel. (+62-24) 7663-2222

Gereja Bethel Tabernacle Kristus Alfa Omega (GBT KAO)
Jl. Gajah Mada 114–118
Semarang 50138
Tel. 024-354-1401

As service schedules can change, especially for English-language services, it is always advisable to confirm the latest information directly with the church.

Schools

For expatriate families relocating to Semarang, there are several international or internationally oriented schools available. While the number of international schools is smaller than in Jakarta or Singapore, many parents actually find this to be an advantage.

Smaller schools often mean smaller class sizes and more personalized attention for students, allowing teachers to better understand each child’s strengths, challenges, and learning style. This can be particularly beneficial for children who are adjusting to a new country, language, or curriculum.

However, smaller schools can also have limitations. Because the student population is smaller, schools may not be able to offer the same range of elective subjects, extracurricular activities, or specialized programs that larger international schools provide. Participation in competitive sports teams or large inter-school activities may also be more limited simply because there are fewer students available to form teams.

For many expatriate families in Semarang, the choice of school will therefore depend on balancing the benefits of a close-knit learning environment with the broader academic and extracurricular opportunities that a larger school might offer.

Semarang Multinational School (SMS)

Jl. Jangli No. 37
Candisari, Semarang
Tel: +62 24 8311424

Semarang Multinational School is a long-established non-profit international school founded in 1982 and run by a parent-based board. The school serves the multinational community in Semarang and focuses on an English-language international curriculum.

The school currently enrolls approximately 130–140 students representing a range of nationalities. The relatively small size allows for a strong sense of community between students, parents, and teachers.

Grade levels offered:

  • Preschool / Kindergarten
  • Primary School
  • Lower Secondary

Because of the smaller enrollment, classes tend to be small and teachers are able to provide more individualized academic support.

Permata Bangsa School

Jl. Setia Budi No. 209A
Banyumanik, Semarang

Permata Bangsa is an English-medium international school offering the Indonesian national curriculum alongside Cambridge international pathways. The school serves both Indonesian and international students and has a modern campus located in the upper Semarang area.

Grade levels offered:

  • Preschool
  • Primary School
  • Junior High School
  • Senior High School

The school offers a full K–12 educational pathway, making it a convenient option for families planning to stay in Semarang for several years.

SIS Semarang (Singapore Intercultural School)

SIS Semarang is part of the Singapore Intercultural School network and offers an international curriculum with an emphasis on global competencies and bilingual development.

Grade levels offered:

  • Preschool / Kindergarten
  • Primary School
  • Secondary School

As part of a regional school network, SIS benefits from shared educational resources and curriculum standards used across its campuses.

Mountainview Christian School (Salatiga)

Jl. Nakula Sadewa Raya No. 55
Salatiga, Central Java

Although located about one hour from Semarang, Mountainview Christian School is often considered by expatriate families living in Central Java who are seeking an international Christian school environment.

The school has approximately 230 students representing multiple nationalities and offers a full K–12 program.

Grade levels offered:

  • Kindergarten
  • Elementary School
  • Middle School
  • High School

Mountainview also offers boarding facilities for students in Grades 7–12, which can be useful for families living outside Salatiga.

Housing

Most expatriates in Semarang rent rather than buy. Many foreign residents prefer Semarang Atas or the higher southern parts of the city because they are generally cooler and closer to residential neighborhoods and schools.

Neighborhoods often mentioned by expatriates include:

  • Candi
  • Bukit Sari
  • Griya Bukit Mas
  • Candi Golf

Lower coastal areas may be hotter and more prone to flooding during heavy rains or high tides, so it is advisable to ask about drainage and previous flooding history before renting a house.

Medical Care

Semarang has several established private hospitals that expatriates commonly use.

SMC RS Telogorejo
Jl. KH Achmad Dahlan
Semarang

RS Columbia Asia Semarang
Jl. Siliwangi No. 143
Kalibanteng

Rumah Sakit St. Elisabeth Semarang
Jl. Kawi No. 1
Candisari

For routine medical care these hospitals generally provide adequate services, although some expatriates still choose to travel to Jakarta or Singapore for complex procedures.

Getting Around Semarang

One of Semarang’s advantages is that Ahmad Yani International Airport is located only about 8 km from the city center, making travel relatively convenient compared with many Indonesian cities.

Transportation options include:

  • Private car and driver
  • Ride-hailing apps such as Grab and Gojek
  • Taxi services including Bluebird

The Trans Semarang BRT system also operates several routes across the city, although most expatriates still rely on private transportation for daily commuting.

Shopping

Major malls in Semarang include:

  • Pollux Mall Paragon
  • DP Mall
  • Mal Ciputra Semarang
  • Java Supermall

For traditional foods and local specialties, Jl. Pandanaran is well known for Semarang delicacies such as lumpia, bandeng presto, and wingko babat.

Dining

Semarang’s dining scene has expanded over the past decade and now includes a mix of Indonesian restaurants, seafood venues, cafés, and international dining options.

One of the city’s most famous historic restaurants is Toko Oen, which has served ice cream, pastries, and colonial-style dishes for generations.

Culture & Weekend Escapes

Semarang has a rich cultural history influenced by Javanese, Chinese, and Dutch colonial heritage.

Popular places to visit include:

  • Kota Lama (Old Town)
  • Lawang Sewu
  • Sam Poo Kong Temple

For weekend trips, residents often travel to:

  • Karimunjawa Islands
  • Bandungan and Ungaran
  • Salatiga
  • Yogyakarta

Final Thoughts Living in Semarang

Semarang may not have the global profile of Jakarta or Bali, but for many expatriates that is exactly its appeal. It offers a manageable city size, a growing international community, and access to both cultural heritage and natural destinations in Central Java.

For the expat who wants comfort, practicality, and a slower pace of life while still enjoying the richness of Indonesian culture, Semarang remains a rewarding place to live.

See you in Semarang!

Living Here: Pros & Cons

  • Excellent Proximity to the Airport: Unlike many Indonesian cities where airport runs require intense planning, Ahmad Yani International Airport sits a mere 8 km from the center, making domestic and regional travel highly stress-free.

  • Close-Knit, Intimate Schooling Environments: Smaller international student bodies (like at Semarang Multinational School) translate to small class sizes and highly individualized academic attention, which acts as a great cushion for children adjusting to a new country.

  • Superb Weekend Escapes: Strategically located as a launchpad for incredible Central Java travel, from the cooler mountain retreats of Bandungan and Salatiga to the pristine marine environments of the Karimunjawa Islands.

  • Coastal Flooding and Heat Risks: The lower, coastal parts of the city are notably hotter and actively prone to severe flooding during heavy rains or high tides (rob), requiring expats to be highly selective about property location.

  • Limited Extracurriculars and Electives: Because the local international schools have smaller overall enrollments, they cannot always offer the vast array of specialized elective subjects, competitive sports teams, or extensive facilities found in massive Jakarta schools.

  • Visible “Bule” Novelty Effect: Because the foreign population is quite minor, newcomers should expect a high degree of local curiosity, staring, and being pointed out in public spaces, which can take some personal adjustment.
