The Indonesian Heritage Society (IHS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding and appreciation of Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage. Through a wide range of educational, cultural, and social activities, IHS provides opportunities for members and visitors to learn about Indonesia’s history, art, traditions, literature, geography, and contemporary society.
The Society attracts a diverse international membership that includes Indonesians, expatriates, and long-term residents. While many activities are conducted in English, some programs may also be offered in other languages depending on volunteer participation and member interest.
Activities
Evening Lecture Series
The Indonesian Heritage Society regularly hosts lectures and presentations by academics, authors, researchers, historians, and cultural experts. Topics cover a broad range of subjects related to Indonesia’s history, arts, culture, religion, archaeology, ethnography, environment, and current affairs.
Explorers
The Explorers program offers opportunities to discover Jakarta and surrounding areas through guided visits, walks, excursions, and cultural experiences.
Study Groups
Study groups bring together members who wish to explore specific aspects of Indonesian culture, history, literature, art, language, and society in greater depth.
Heritage Tours
Heritage Tours provide participants with opportunities to visit destinations throughout Indonesia while learning about the unique history, traditions, and cultural heritage of different regions.
Museum Tours
One of the Society’s best-known programs is its museum tour initiative. Volunteer guides introduce visitors to Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage through guided tours of museums and cultural institutions. Tours may be offered in several languages depending on guide availability.
Museum Projects
Museum Projects allow volunteers to support Indonesian museums and cultural institutions through activities such as research, translation, documentation, cataloguing, and educational resource development.
School Programs
The Society works with schools and educational institutions to help students develop a greater appreciation of Indonesia’s cultural, historical, and geographical diversity.
Shop and Publications
The Indonesian Heritage Society produces a variety of publications and merchandise, including calendars, note cards, books, and other items that support the Society’s educational and cultural programs.
