Java Lava is an informal community of people who enjoy trekking, mountain climbing, and camping throughout Indonesia. It is not a membership organization and not a commercial tour operator. Instead, it operates as a volunteer-based community where participants organize trips and share the costs.
The group has been bringing together hikers for many years and continues to organize regular mountain expeditions across Indonesia.
Activities
Java Lava organizes regular climbs and trekking expeditions to many of Indonesia’s mountains and volcanoes.
Typical activities include:
- Mountain climbing and volcano trekking
- Multi-day camping trips
- Long weekend adventures throughout Indonesia
- Occasional extended expeditions to more remote islands
- Periodic overseas trekking trips for members living abroad
A programme of scheduled trips is published each year, with destinations ranging from the mountains of Java to Sulawesi, Kalimantan, Nusa Tenggara, and beyond. (javalava.id)
Participation
Everyone is welcome to participate.
There is no formal membership fee. Trip participants simply register with the individual trip leader once a hike has been announced. Each participant—including the trip leader—pays their own share of the trip expenses.
Most communication is conducted in English, making the group especially popular with expatriates and internationally minded Indonesian hikers.
Mailing List
To receive announcements of upcoming trips, visit the Java Lava website and join the mailing list.
Gunung Bagging
Java Lava also recommends Gunung Bagging, one of the most comprehensive English-language resources for mountain climbers in Indonesia. The site contains detailed information on hundreds of Indonesian mountains and volcanoes, including route descriptions, maps, hiking advice, permit information, and GPS resources.
