Over the past decade, Canggu has transformed from a quiet surf village into the most talked-about expat destination in Bali — and arguably in all of Southeast Asia. The stretch of neighbourhoods running through Berawa, Batu Bolong, and Pererenan is now the island’s primary hub for digital nomads, remote workers, creatives, and younger expats. If you want a high-energy, café-rich, socially active life close to good surf breaks, Canggu is probably where you’ll end up.
Why Expats Choose Canggu
Canggu offers the best concentration of coworking spaces, specialty coffee shops, international restaurants, fitness studios and beach clubs in Bali. The social life is exceptional — it is genuinely easy to arrive knowing no one and build a wide network within weeks. Surf breaks at Batu Bolong, Berawa and Old Man’s attract a year-round surfing community, and the broader sports and wellness scene is active and well-developed.
The trade-offs are real, though. Traffic in Canggu — particularly along Jl Batu Bolong and the Berawa-Pererenan stretch — has become severely congested as the area’s popularity has grown. This is now the most frequently cited complaint among Canggu residents. If you work from home or are flexible about when you travel, this is manageable. If you need to commute regularly, factor it in carefully.
Housing in Canggu
Canggu is now among the most expensive rental markets in Bali, reflecting its demand. As a general guide:
- Modern 1-bedroom villa or apartment: USD 700–1,500/month
- 2–3 bedroom villa with pool: USD 1,500–4,000+/month
The Berawa, Batu Bolong and Pererenan neighbourhoods command the highest prices and offer the best access to the Canggu lifestyle. Pererenan is slightly quieter and often a fraction cheaper than central Batu Bolong.
Many leases in Bali are offered on a one or two-year prepaid basis. Always engage a reputable notaris before signing long-term agreements. Remote Work & Coworking
Canggu is Bali’s coworking capital. The neighbourhood has dozens of spaces ranging from boutique workspaces to large multi-floor coworking hubs. Internet connectivity is generally reliable for remote work, with fibre broadband widely available and strong 4G from Telkomsel.
Bali launched the Digital Nomad Visa (E33G) in 2023 specifically for remote workers employed by non-Indonesian companies — with no Indonesian income tax on foreign-sourced income. Combined with Canggu’s infrastructure, this makes it one of the most practical remote-work locations in the world.
