Growth of the Sport in Indonesia

Flag football first gained popularity in Indonesia during the early 2000s. The establishment of the Indonesian Flag Football Association (IFFA) helped organize leagues and competitions, contributing to the sport’s continued growth. In 2024, IFFA evolved into the Asosiasi American Football Indonesia (AAFI), which now oversees national development programs, competitions, and Indonesia’s national flag football teams.

Indonesia now hosts national tournaments such as the Merdeka Bowl and participates in international competitions through its national teams. Interest in the sport has increased further following flag football’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

What is Flag Football?

Flag football is a non-tackle version of American football. Instead of physically tackling an opponent, players stop a play by pulling a flag attached to the ball carrier’s waist.

The game retains many of the strategic elements of traditional American football, including passing, running, defensive coverage, and scoring touchdowns, while emphasizing speed, agility, teamwork, and sportsmanship.

Because of its reduced physical contact, flag football is suitable for a wide range of participants and is increasingly popular among both men and women worldwide.
