Founded in 2008 by animal welfare advocates Karin Franken, Femke den Haas, and Natalie Stewart, JAAN has grown into one of Indonesia’s most respected animal protection organizations. (Jakarta Animal Aid Network)
JAAN works across two primary areas:
Domestic Animal Welfare
The Domestic Division rescues, rehabilitates, shelters, and rehomes abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs and cats. Programs include:
- Dog and cat rescue and adoption
- Foster care programs
- Street cat sterilization initiatives
- Animal welfare education
- Responsible pet ownership campaigns
- Support for carriage horse welfare
- Advocacy against the dog meat trade through the Dog Meat Free Indonesia campaign
JAAN’s shelter operates as a no-kill facility and relies heavily on foster homes, volunteers, and donations. (JAAN DomesticJAANDomestic)
Wildlife Rescue and Protection
JAAN’s Wildlife Division rescues, rehabilitates, and releases Indonesian wildlife affected by illegal trade, exploitation, or habitat loss. Programs include:
- Rescue and rehabilitation of primates
- Protection of birds of prey including Brahminy Kites and sea eagles
- Anti-wildlife trafficking operations
- Rehabilitation and release of confiscated wildlife
- Dolphin and marine animal protection
- Public education campaigns promoting the message that wild animals belong in the wild
JAAN works closely with Indonesian government agencies, law enforcement authorities, and conservation partners to combat wildlife crime and improve protection for endangered species. (JAAN Indonesia)
Education and Awareness
A major part of JAAN’s mission is education. The organization regularly provides presentations and awareness programs for schools, businesses, and community groups throughout Indonesia, helping people better understand responsible pet ownership and wildlife conservation.
