For marriages between foreign nationals and Indonesian citizens in Indonesia, Indonesian authorities generally require proof that the foreign national is legally free to marry. This document is commonly referred to as a Letter of No Impediment, Certificate of No Impediment, Affidavit of Eligibility to Marry, or Single Status Declaration, depending on the country issuing it.

In many cases, this document can be obtained from the foreign national’s embassy or consulate in Indonesia. Some countries may instead require that the document be obtained from civil registry authorities in the person’s home country.

As procedures differ by nationality and local Indonesian marriage authorities, couples should confirm the exact requirements with both their embassy and the religious office or Civil Registry office that will process the marriage.

If a formal Letter of No Impediment is not available from the embassy, some Indonesian authorities may accept a sworn declaration or affidavit of single status that has been notarized or witnessed by a consular officer. Acceptance of such declarations is at the discretion of the local authorities.

Foreign nationals may also be required to provide supporting documentation such as:

  • Passport
  • Birth certificate
  • Divorce decree (if previously married)
  • Death certificate of a former spouse (if widowed)
  • Certified Indonesian translations of foreign documents
  • Apostilled documents, where required

Important

Marriage requirements for mixed-nationality couples in Indonesia can vary depending on the region, religious authority, and local Civil Registry office. Always verify the current requirements with your embassy and the Indonesian authority that will register your marriage before making wedding arrangements.
