Since 1995, Alam Bahasa has given Indonesian language courses to people of various occupations from around the world. Foreigners can learn the Indonesian language (bahasa Indonesia) as well as the Indonesian culture and local language in a home-like atmosphere. The classroom activities are presented in the frame of the Direct Method, which immerses the learners directly in Indonesian language practices. Teaching media and various activities play an important role to support learners’ comprehension and to make the learning process fun. Grammar is taught inductively. The utterances which are practiced in every communication topic contain basic structures of Indonesian language. In this way, learners acquire the structures, which enable them to construct various sentences along with their vocabulary development.
Alam Bahasa provides the language courses not only to be conducted in Yogyakarta, but also in other cities in Indonesia, among others Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Bali, Surabaya, Aceh, Sorowako, Manado, Papua and Tapanuli. Established in 2009 as a means to feed 50 orphans living in Cipanas, the organic farm was the brilliant idea of a former orphan at the “Children’s Village”, an award-winning orphanage run by Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM). Once the orphanage turned into a Community Centre, the organic farm became YUM’s social enterprise, selling vegetables to many households in Jakarta. We use a combination of child directed and teacher lead activities throughout the morning. The focal word is ACTIVITIES. Our children learn through actively participating in a lesson, not from only watching the teacher demonstrate a concept. At Discovery Center each child is seen as an individual and we foster development of emotional well being, English language skills, and socialization in addition to the “academics” which are taught through learning centers in order to help a child “grow” at his/her own pace (Montessori style).
